Smallmouth
Bass
and Muskie Fishing
on Lakes in Northern Minnesota
August
19-22,
2010
Russ Foster
and Paul Earney joined Nathan and
Kerry Mayer for a
four-day fishing trip in northern Minnesota.
Good weather
boosted expectations as the four anglers set
out after smallmouth bass and muskie. Nate and Kerry
landed several of the toothy critters, including several
in the 30-35 inch range.
This year's
camping experience was altered somewhat as "the
young guy" (Nate)
suprised the others with spiffy new equipment including
a full-featured cooking station and a 10 x 10-foot
framed canvas canopy. Kerry said he prefers his "trusty
tarp", but he soon warmed up to the new gear... taking
advantage of the extra space to prepare and cook meals
for the group.
There were
many laughs as Paul (a.k.a. ”Vern”) clumsily retold
some of the Ole and Lena jokes Kerry sent via email
just days before.
"Yah, well
den... maybe da joke tellin’ is best left to da
ones who git most of da fish. Uff-da! Dat's a nice one
ya got dare, Nate". — Vern
Nate Mayer hoists a fine specimen
representative of the "Shoepack"
strain of muskies found in their favorite northern
Minnesota lake.
